News Release from: VanNatta Public Relations SALEM'S INAUGURAL PET PARENT DAY CELEBRATION Posted: June 7th, 2011 11:12 AM

Does your dog have their own closet full of clothes? Is your cat reining royalty in your house? Does your pet eat better than you? If so, then you are a pet parent and this party is for you! Nature's Pet Market in South Salem, your one stop store for organic and holistic pet foods and treats, accessories, grooming and education, is hosting the inaugural Salem Pet Parent Day on Saturday June 11 from 11am-3pm. The event will be held at Nature's Pet Market at 4555 Liberty Road S. in the Sunnyslope Shopping Center. The party will serve as a benefit for Willamette Humane Society with 10% of all sales going to the local non-profit.

Activities during the Pet Parent Day party will include free portraits with your pet, a look alike photo contest and prizes for best matching pet and parent. There will also be wine tasting for the parents and treat tasting for the pets.

Terri Ellen, owner of Nature's Pet Salem said, "I love parties and the energy they create. Our animals respond to positive environments and many of our customers consider their pets as their kids. Before Mother's Day, I started thinking about honoring pet's moms somehow….and what about the dads? The idea just took off from there!"

Other retailers in the Sunnyslope Shopping Center will also be participating and donating a portion of their proceeds to the Willamette Humane Society. They include, Can-B-Clean, Class Act Events and Gifts, Eden's Apple, Garlic Jims and Limeberry Yogurt. The event is also being held in conjunction with the Willamette Humane Society's Radio-Extravaganza KZBY Radio AM 1490 from 10-3pm.

Xylitol Dogs

We all know that chocolate and onions are not good for our dogs but I'll bet you don't know about a hidden ingredient, XYLITOL! It's found in some of our human foods and can be harmful to your dog in large quantities. It's a sugar like substance being used more and more in our human foods. It's great for humans but causes a drop in blood sugar in dogs. Even a small piece of gum with Xylitol in it can injure your dog. We, at Natures Pet Salem , care deeply about your dog. Please keep Xylitol out of your dogs reach! Just a heads up!

WHAT BUGS US THE MOST? FLEAS! LISTEN TO THE PAWS FOR THOUGHT RADIO SHOW ON KMUZ 88.5 FM OR ONLINE AT KMUZ.ORG OR THROUGH THE TUNEIN RADIO APP on your smartphone or  iPad .     Fleas are just awful. If you’ve ever had a flea infestation you know exactly what I am talking about! Fleas and ticks are much more than just a nuisance. They cause severe distress in dogs and cats and, more important, they cause disease. By the time a pet owner notices fleas on their pet, the fleas have already injected their salivary proteins, transmitted infectious diseases and are already laying eggs. Ticks can transmit diseases to a dog or cat way before the pests are even found and removed. The fleas that invade our homes and feed on our cats and dogs don't usually live on non-furry hosts like humans but they can and do bite people. Adult fleas are perfectly built for hiding in fur. They have flattened bodies that help them to navigate through fur or hair. They...
